Humans of CUC

When I graduated as a PE teacher in 1999, I landed my dream job.

I found work in a small rural high school. The kids were amazing. I thought I was set for life. In fact, I had twenty-three years running around with students on the oval, having meaningful health conversations in the classroom. It was a brilliant way to spend my working life.

When an opportunity came up for me to re-train and to study a Masters, I saw the need to keep building new skills, different skills, to support the wonderful students at my school. It’s not a natural fit for a PE teacher to become a teacher librarian, and I knew I would be challenged.

Second time round, studying a postgraduate online while working full time and raising a family, has been markedly different. I’ve needed to be super organised with my time and I’ve had frequent feelings of uncertainty that I would pass at this level. Finding help and assistance at the start, and then a good space to study has been so valuable. So has the strong belief that effort equals reward.

I can say that, in my stage of life, going back to uni has been a really positive experience. And it’s been one of the best decisions for my teaching career.
