I’d never wanted to be a doctor?
There weren’t any healthcare workers in my family, let alone doctors, so the medical system was very foreign to me when I was a kid. It wasn’t something I was averse to, but I’d never really considered it for myself.

It was late in Year 12 when I saw a poster at school about medicine and stopped to think about it. I liked science at school and I also realised I enjoyed working with people. Medicine offered both, as well as opportunities to work in rural towns like Goulburn. For the first time, I asked myself,
Why not me?
I remember sitting down with my careers adviser at school and bringing up the idea. I think she had to hide her frustration at me raising this at the very end of Year 12, but she was very supportive and laid out some options. One of these was a pathway to medicine through a Bachelor of Health Science.

I am now at the end of that pathway, having completed that degree and a subsequent Doctor of Medicine and Surgery. While I am nervous to start work, I can honestly say that I could not be happier with the career I have chosen. My experience so far has been of a job that challenges me and brings together my interests in science, problem-solving and interacting with people.

I’m about to commence my role as an intern and hope to become a rural generalist — a doctor with a wide range of skills who works in rural and remote settings.
