Humans of CUC

My study journey has been far from conventional, but every step has shaped who I am today.
I first discovered my passion for nursing in high school by doing a vocational course. That was my early insight into healthcare.
I didn’t get the ATAR I needed for uni but I didn’t let that hold me back. I did get into an Enrolled Nursing scholarship program — a hands-on experience from the start. Working as an EN gave me confidence and practical knowledge and I think gave me an insight into nursing that I might not have gained had I gone straight to uni.
Determined to grow, I completed my Bachelor of Nursing as a mature-age student, part-time and via distance. Studying this way allowed me to continue working full-time and work around major life events. We built a house, got married, and had our first child during that time.
Since graduating with my bachelor, I’ve been working in operating theatres. It’s an environment I find both exciting and rewarding. I’ve found a passion for perioperative care, which has led me to pursue a postgraduate diploma in Anaesthetic and Recovery Nursing. Juggling shift work with a young family and living out of town makes study time-limited, but I’ve learned to make it work.
My journey proves that there is no single path to success. With determination, flexibility, and support, there are many ways to reach your goals. Whether you start in high school or return to study later in life, every step forward counts.
So don’t be afraid to take the road less travelled – it might lead you exactly where you are meant to be.
